The Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums do not have the same connotation in the East at all as we do in the West. Here they are honored very episodically on the occasion of the memory of our dear deceased.

In Japan the yellow chrysanthemum is the flower of sun and light. Throughout the East this flower accompanies our wishes for happiness, health and friendship. It represents the maturity of autumn.

Their variety is innumerable, as well as their colors. For me it is the flower of secrecy, because it never shows its heart but protects it.

In chan or sumi-e painting, we strive to reveal their beauty through the richness of their multiple forms accompanied by the leaves that surround them highlighting them.

Once you have practiced painting the petals and their leaves, you will learn to acquire a gesture that will gradually gain in dexterity. The shapes will be less precise, more suggestive in favor of greater liveliness.

It is only then that you will enter into a greater freedom of composition expressing both the elegance, the beauty and the life force of this flower.
